Capeli Cymru

Capeli Cymru: Preserving the Nonconformist Heritage of Wales is led by the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales and is supported by The National Lottery Heritage Fund.

The project aims to safeguard the rich legacy of Welsh Nonconformity by developing practical and sustainable approaches to protecting chapel buildings and heritage for future generations.

A key element of the project is a national chapels census, gathering information on active, closed, converted and demolished buildings to help inform future conservation priorities.

Alongside this work, the project will place a strong emphasis on improving the care and management of archives held within chapels. Many congregations hold unique records, photographs, minute books, plans, and other historical materials that are at risk of loss or deterioration. Capeli Cymru will work with denominations, congregations, archives services, and heritage partners to raise awareness of best practice caring for archive material.
