Anglesey Archives has received a grant of £480 from Sporting Heritage for an event to celebrate the island’s sporting past and raise awareness of the ‘Ynys Môn Island Games Association’.

Anglesey’s bid to host the International Island Games in 2025 was given a significant boost when the International Island Games Association (IIGA) confirmed in July that the island’s status as preferred bidders to host what has been dubbed a ‘Mini Olympics’ in six years’ time.  There is still much work to do to ensure that Anglesey can host the games and everyone on the island will need to get involved and ensure that the committee can get this over the line. Thanks to the generous support of Sporting Heritage Anglesey Archives will be able to play its part.

The funding will allow the service to create a bespoke exhibition celebrating the islands unique sporting heritage and culture. The exhibition will be created by volunteers and consist of a series of photographs and documents illustrating how sport can have a positive impact on a small community.  The exhibition will be launched on National Sporting Heritage Day (30th September) and will form part of a celebratory month, which will help to increase an awareness and understanding of our sporting heritage by providing greater access to stories and archives of local sporting achievement. The exhibition will also help to raise awareness of the good work of the the ‘Ynys Môn Island Games Association’ and its bid to host the International Island Games in 2025.
