Go on an adventure this half term!

2016 marks the Year of Adventure in Wales so if you are looking for fun, adventurous and interesting activities this half term look no further than your local museum, archive and library!

Here is a taster of some of the great events that are happening across Wales:

  • Half Term Fun with Raspberry Pi – Swansea Central Library (17th February 2.30pm)

Watch how you can make a Raspberry Pi pop balloons, then have a go yourself! Create a sweet shop game or build a beeping, flashing robot! FREE



  • Little Time Travellers at Flintshire Archives

Then and Now – activities to introduce young children (18months – 5 years) to archives.  Explore the past with your children.  Discover historical treasures through pictures, stories, craft and music sessions.



  • National Museum, Cardiff – Treasures: Adventures in Archaeology (26th January – 30th October 2016)

Step into the world of famous explorers and travel on an adventure uncovering treasures from around the world at this exciting new exhibition at National Museum, Cardiff.


  •  Adventure in the Library – National Library of Wales

Come on an adventure around the Library’s exhibitions with the help of our brand new activity book. It’s full of exciting activities, games and puzzles…

  • Wrexham Library – Kids Takeover

Kids will be taking over Wrexham Library on February 16th, drop in to see them at work!

  • Tredegar House – Bird Box Making (15-19 February)

Join in with our lively bird box making workshops and invite some feathered friends into your own garden.

Head into the House to discover the secret lives of the servants in the ‘Below Stairs’ rooms and go exploring on tours to the ground floor rooms. Be a helper in the Great Kitchen, smashing up spices and get hands on making bird feeders.


  • St Fagan’s Family Ghost Walks (19th and 20th February)

See another side to the museum as night falls over St Fagan’s castle – an hour of frighteningly good family fun!  Suitable for children aged 7-11, must be accompanied by an adult.


  • Tutankhamun’s Tomb – The Egypt Centre

Explore the secrets of mummification as you practice on our dummy mummy. Find out what was needed to live forever in the afterlife, and learn how to write your name in magical hieroglyphs. You will also have a go at some arts and crafts activities, and make your very own mummy model.

£20 for the day 10am – 3.00pm


  • Kite making and Snowdrop Art – Chirk Castle (16,17 and 18 Feb 11am – 3pm)

Calling all kids, join us at Chirk Castle for some spring themed crafts. For the active amongst you we’re going to be making kites, which with a bit of wind can be flown from the meadow in front of the castle. For the more artistic of you we will also be doing some snowdrop art, so take inspiration from our beautiful snowdrop displays and see what you can create!


  • Valentine’s Treasure Hunt – Ammanford Library (13Th February 10am-12pm)

Valentine’s Treasure Hunt with the chance to win a family ticket to see the show ‘Shapeshifters’ in the Miners Theatre.

  • Neath Library – Revolting Rhymes and Ludicrous Limerick Workshop (18th February 11am)

An hour of naughty fun with Roald Dahl’s Revolting Rhymes and Dirty Beasts finishing off with the creation of our own ludicrous limerick!
The first part of the session will have a selection of Roald Dahl’s Revolting Rhymes and Dirty Beasts read aloud followed by a fun workshop creating our very own Neath Library Limerick!


  • Pennard Library, Swansea – Lego Robot Techno Maze (17th February, 11am – 12.30pm)

Build a fantastic Lego robot using the Lego Mindstorms NXT robotics kit and programme your robot to complete a maze!


  • From Pithead to Sickbed – Glamorgan Archives

Based on a major new study carried out by Swansea University’s Disability and Industrial  Society project, this exhibition will explore how disabled people were treated and viewed in the mining industry and the South Wales communities that relied upon it.
